Before the first dawn there was a single candle, and its flame did not die.

For centuries the Order of the Wick kept the Undying Flame burning in the Heart of the Depths. Then High Keeper Aldric, afraid it would go out, swallowed it whole. Every candle below went dark at once. What walked out of the Heart wore a crown of snuffed wicks.

They call him the Gloom King now. You carry the last lit candle. Go down.

Candlelit Depths is a pixel-art roguelike platformer. Every floor is generated fresh, every run starts from nothing, and the dark keeps getting deeper.

What waits below

  • 30 floors across the Crypt, the Foundry and the Hollow, each big enough to get lost in, with a winding route to the sealed door.
  • Guardians on floors 10 and 20. A candle-crowned Warden, a great Eye that watches from its hood, and a Wyrm that swims through stone. Each comes in two variants with their own attacks.
  • The Gloom King waits on the last floor.
  • Mini-bosses and puzzle rooms hidden off the main path. Beat them to claim powerful artifacts like Moth Wings, Thunderclap and Gecko Grip.
  • Travellers camped in quiet rooms. A last keeper, a knight who ran, a mapmaker, a melted candle merchant and a lost little ghost. Each one has a story that changes as you go deeper, and a gift for the one who listens.
  • Lore everywhere: tablets, scrolls, plaques and gravestones (some sad, some very silly).
  • Lightning at your fingertips. Aim with the mouse and click to strike, but every bolt costs a precious orb. Stomping is free.
  • 15 relics to buy between floors, plus shrines, urns, chests (and the chests that bite back).

Ways to play

  • Classic: 30 floors and the Gloom King.
  • Endless: no bottom, with a guardian every 10 floors.
  • Daily: the same dungeon for everyone, today only.
  • Time Rush: 4 floors and the King, against the clock.
  • Easy, Normal or Hard. Easy lets you retry boss fights from a checkpoint.

Controls (all rebindable)

  • Move: arrow keys / WASD
  • Jump: Space / Z
  • Lightning: left click (aims at the cursor) or X / J
  • Dash: Shift / C (with the Shadow Step relic)
  • Talk / read: E
  • Pause: Esc
  • Fullscreen: F
  • Mute: M
